    Default Ross Cutlery

    So I took me newly acquired Frederick Reynolds to Ross Cutlery in downtown L.A. to have it reground and honed. The regrind work is superb, but it feels to me like the blade is far from shave ready. It wont pass a HHT or arm shave test, definitely didn't pass the actual shave test...tugged like crazy. Should I hone it up the rest of the way myself on the Norton 4K/8K, or take it back to them to finish up the job? Pics Below:

    I'd ask them about their razor sharpening process. Might need to go back down to a 1k to make sure you have a proper razor bevel.

    I would take it back in to see what they say, but I wouldn't let them touch it. The general rule of thumb to remember is that if the person honing your razor doesn't use one daily...you've picked the wrong guy. Don't let them 'fix' it because you'll end up with a razor in the same condition except with a ton of hone wear.

    Well I just got off of the phone with Richard over at Ross Cutlery (one of the owners) and he said that he'd be more than glad to properly hone it up for me tomorrow morning. Their reputation is solid and he himself uses straights on a near daily basis. Thoughts?

    I suspect you'll be fine having him hone your razor as I have heard only good things about Ross cutlery from members here who have regularly honed razors for other members. That being said, the general rule is to never let a knife shop hone your razor for you.

    Good idea, the only reason I went to Ross at all was that I heard about them from other members on the forum, and heard good things. I think I'll be giving them a second chance to hone the blade tomorrow morning, and that should right the issue. The owner was very surprised to hear that I had a problem in the first place.

    So Richard honed up my razor this morning and it is vastly sharper, passes the HHT, and arm hair test, and looks great. He even went as far as to refund me for the cost of the regrind and hone because it wasn't done right the first time. Great people at Ross Cutlery, their customer service is great and I would recommend them to anyone.
