W&B Advice
I recently purchased this Wade and Butcher that I'm excited about. Overall it appears to be in great original condition considering it's age. I used a bit of Maas to remove some tarnish, but being that I'm new at this I thought it wise to seek advice before proceeding further. Unfortunately, someone was very aggressive with some sort of abrasive at some point, and the scratches extend into the etching of the cross. I would really like to preserve the entire etching, and at the same time remove the existing scratches. I think it will be possible with patience and the right approach, so my question is, how would you approach it? The highest grit wet/dry sand paper I have is 1000 (3M). I have no problem buying something else higher if needed. The other thing I was thinking about was taping a section of the blade and then just using the Maas for a while, untaping, and viewing the contrast to see what improvement there was, if any. I have a 10X loupe for viewing. One more question; I would also like to clean up the inside of the scales a little as there are a few tiny burrs along the edge. Can I use the 1000 grit for that?
Thanks in advance for any help,

Use a 2000 grit wet and dry with some 3n1 oil as a lubricant,(hats off to Ron/Utopian for this) then do the Maas routine, As for the scales the same would apply.
It is easier to fool people than to convince them they have been fooled. Twain
