Thanked: 2What is the purpose
of getting your razor customized or re-finished? I just purchased a 7/8 Wade & Butcher in pretty good shape and want to send it off to someone to get new scales and a high polish. I want it to look like some of the beautiful razors I've seen on here. I still want to be able to use it to shave with, but am curious if it is worth the money and also, will it cost a small fortune and will I want to use it to shave with or just have it on display? All comments welcome.

Thanked: 3795What is the purpose? To convert it into what you want.
Is it worth the money? That completely depends on is it worth it to you?
Will you want to use it to shave with or jut have it on display? I'm not aware of anyone on this forum being psychic, so you will have to make that decision for yourself. Since you stated that you want to be able to use it, I don't understand why this is an issue.

Thanked: 2Utopian, I understand it is to convert it into what you want, I was more asking what made people decide to do this. Was it because the original condition of the razor was messed up or were the scales cracked.
I also realize that the cost depends on me. What I wanted to know there is, were the people that had their razors done happy with the decision they made.
And finally, it is not an issue with me and your psychic comment is starting to rub me as confrontational, when all I was doing was asking a question. I have collected alot of things in my life and was curious if the razor turns out nicer than the pics, do most people use them or display them in a collection. I'm new at this and I know I asked for any comments, but did not expect answers like I got.

Thanked: 13245Thread moved
I moved this out of the Gallery and into the Workshop, the Gallery is more for the Razor porn pics of finished work..
Also I think perhaps you mis-read Ron/Utopians meaning there and took it the wrong way, it is rather easy to do on internet forums ...
Keep in mind SRP is a bit different then other forums people here are genuinely trying to help you newer guys out...and trust me when you start honing, you're are going to want to have Ron in your corner
Thanks
and let me know if there are any questions I can help you with

Thanked: 2JMS, thanks and I was not offended by his comments. Just feel if someone is put off by anothers questions or comments, best to not even respond to them unless it is to help. I dont want this to get blown out of proportion, was just curious about getting a razor customized or re-conditioned.

Thanked: 13245There are many reasons that razors come in for work..
Some come in because of age and/or damage some come in for purely aesthetic reasons... some come in for balance problems or fit problems...
If you look through that first forum of customs/restorations many of the threads have before pics of the razors and that will really give you some ideas...
In the classifieds you will find a ton of listing of Restorers just pm a few and ask what they do...
Prices vary and we do not discuss them on the open forum, those have to be by PM or e-mail...
Hope that helps a bit....

In general, for me, when I sand, polish and/or rescale it is due to some aspect of damage.
Scales twisted, miss-sized, shattered, etc=rescale. Worm holes, scratches, broken tips may get smoothed out, maybe patched and polished. Often they have beauty and charm left, with a signature of history.
Regarding, steel patina is nice; although personally if rust/pitting is to be removed with aggressive grit then typically I'll keep sanding up to 2000 grit and polish. It just seems like the right way to finish a job.
When I shave a razor I spent the extra time with, I am NOT compulsive about keeping that mirror finish. When I finish a shave, my final wipe is with a dry wash cloth, not a fine polish cloth. Kinda counter intuitive after all that polish time.
So in that regards, my "display" razors are not shaveable stock. Steel with some sort of damage might be mixed with scales that didn't come out right on one side. Still pretty, but not a genuine tool.
Shave it, don't display it
