Pin Placement
I'm just curious. How do you determine where to drill the scales for the hinge pin placement. Is there a rule of thumb?

Thanked: 1072I think it has to look right first of all. If you already have a wedge pinned in place or at least have marked out where your wedge is going, I like to leave only a couple of millimeters clearance for the blade when the razor is closed. That will determine how far up the scale the pivot needs to be. Then just center on the scale at that point. But even then still check visually to make sure it looks good and your happy with the location before drlling.
Hope that makes sense

Thanked: 13246In general about 3/8 of an inch, (6-7mm) but Baldy is more correct in his answer of "it needs to look right" and the butt of the tail needs to be sitting at the end of the scales for correct function and correct feel.....
To get the whole look right, the width at the pivot end of the scales, should also approximately match the tang..... So when the razor is in the open stropping / honing position it all flows.. There are tons of little tricks to make them work right,,, and in the workshop sticky and the Wiki you will find even more help...

The absolute best way to learn how to get the fit and function down is to study the vintage razors and see how those guys did things for the past 200+ years they kinda knew a thing or two about it...
