Amboyna is my favorite burl tied with Thuya. If you find some try to get some highly figured wood - the look is much superior. I used Buxwoods and have found some good pieces on e-bay if you wait it out. Also Bob's exotic woods gets some good shipments in every year. Just make sure to use a liner when building the scales or you will be sorry.

The reason for that is that burl woods are a little more fragile than most other kinds of wood.

So you'd use a liner (something made for instance of steel/brass etc, like an extra scale) to make sure the wood doesn't move and crack.

I think this isn't needed when the burl wood has been proffessionally stabilised.

Have a look at a seller called "Burl Source" on Bladeforums. He sells stabilised and non-stabilised woods all the time.

There's a couple of others that do as well over there.

    Hi all. newby here.

I just wanted to mention that I agree with lining Burl scales.

Stabalized or not, the swirly nature of the grain means that in long thin pieces like for use in SR scales, it will be very fragile. Even if you managed to work it down to the shape and thickness of a scale without breaking it, you'd still have to treat it like an egg once assembled. Machining a 1/16th or so ss or brass liner to bond the Burl to would make a very attractive and much, much sturdier scale. It will also add some nice heft to the razor. I personally like a weighty razor, but to each his own.
