    When I feel adventurous its all free hand, other wise I use a few old scales of various sizes.

    I trace the blade onto a piece of paper and then sketch the scale shape until I have something I like. I usually follow the curve in the spine of a blade.

    I like to have a reasonably narrow scale in the area of the razor's tang so that I have more room for my fingers. That usually impacts my overall scale design.

    I just sit down with a pen and paper and doodle shapes. Once I get some lines I like I get the blade I am going to use and tweak the shape to fit the blade.
