Thanked: 4942Nice 5/8 W&B
A couple weeks ago when I was showing a friend how to make scales, he asked how the wood would look teamed up with a razor. So.... I restored an old 5/8 smiley W&B and put it on a set of Bubinga Scales. I think he'll be making some more wood scales for sure.
Have fun,
Lynn

Thanked: 1072I'm not a real big wood scale man myself, but there's something about those that I like, slender and elegant, very classy.

Looks really great Lynn! The wood matches up nice with the wood. I always enjoy seeing your work.

Thanked: 45I do some wood working type of projects and the one that appeals to me the most are the furniture I make that I leave gouges and hand plane marks in the wood so it is obviously been made with hand tools.
I wonder if you could do something similar with scales even though they might be a bit small. It would give it instant character and old world charm. The only wood ones I've seen are like yours...which looks great by the way....but finished very nicely instead of not.

Thanked: 4942I think you can have a nice rustic look with wood scales. I like to use a little Renaissance wax or bees wax with lemon or orange oil after sanding to about 400 or 600 depending on the wood. If you use traditional shapes and pinning with less gloss, you can get pretty rustic. I really like the look of Zebra wood, Rose wood, Cocobola, Olive wood, ebony and a few others. Obviously, you can go to higher gloss with other products like CA and some of the tung oil mixtures. So many choices. You can have a lot of fun with this. Please put up some pics when you do.
Have fun,
Lynn

Nice 5/8" W&B
Hello, Lynn:
That is a tastefully-rendered rustic razor, indeed. I like the choice of wood and the color. Well done, oh noble Lynn.

Obie
