Default Wierd blade profile on a Dorko

    Hi All,

I have a 6/8 round point Dorko which I've polished up, well actually hand sanded. The problem is the blade profile or cross section shape. From the spine it is like a full hollow ground then about 1/4" from the edge seems to be fatter. So trying to hone is almost impossible, I have got a bevel started but no way will I get a nice profile as it is impossible for the edge to be always in contact with the hone.
Has anyone ever seen this before ?. Any cure ?.
I hope to get it fixed as apart from this it's a nice looking good sized razor.

    Gary,

I'm having a hard time visualizing what you're trying to describe. Do you have a photo? It may be some sort of wedge or a 1/4 hollow perhaps.

Ed, imagine running your thumb and forefinger from the spine to the edge. Just before the edge it goes slightly thicker, like a small bulge.

    Gary...

It's called a Hamburg grind. It's supposed to be that way. It was done to give some strength to thin blades.

Oh thanks Bill, I might send this along to you for some edge work then, I'm having a bit of a job honing this one.

Gary, here is another page from the same website that Randy directed you to. This shows the ridge should clear the hone.
