Thanked: 2591From the pic it seems the steel under the rust spots is pretty corroded. I can see the same problem on other spots along the edge.
I'd first run the razor one a 1k stone to see if I can get clean steel along the bevel.Last edited by mainaman; 10-24-2010 at 11:45 AM.

Soak the spot with some oil for a while then scrape the spot with a razor blade going in direction from spine to edge. If you are careful it will scrape away the rust without scratching the blade.

You could go to the Auto Shop and and get some 1500 grit and 2000 grit sand paper...

Eleblue, I've used the technique you mentioned frequently to brighten up blades. All I usually do is hand polish using simichrome....scales included. The time involved is generally under about ten minutes, but the results are nice. However, in your situation, you will likely have some residual pitting at the tip and as mentioned, you may have a bit of cottage cheese underneath during honing.

Whatever you do be careful and safe. That's a nasty spot to be working on. Spike point and edge.

Thanked: 9If you don't want to polish the whole blade you can use a glass fibre pen to remove the rusty spots on the blade. The rust is usually deeper than what you see.
I would suggest to re-set the bevel with a lower grit stone after cleaning up the rusty spots before you move on to finer hones.

ok tried some wd 40 didnt remove much rust at all so then i used some clr (calcium lime and rust remover) it did a great job it took care of the red and black rust it revealed the steel was pitted under the rust so on to the sanding 800 grit 1500 grit 2000 grit all an all it took about two hours of sanding then on to the honing . it had a small nick at the toe of the blade so i bread knifed it on a soft ark stone then set the bevel on my yellow coticule . then honed it on my belgian natural combination stone. so here's the before pic
