Anyone interested in Scale blank kits w. pins/washers & wedge?
I had a few inquiries about the scale blanks with concerns about where to get the rest of the parts needed to make the scales.
If there is an interest I will put a few kits together that will have all the needed pieces. You add shaping, contouring and finishing.
These will be $18/kit for all woods except cocobolo which will be $20. Shipping is same $5 for US/Canada for up to 4 sets in a bubble envelope. $8 for Europe.
A kit will contain a set of scale blanks, 4 collars/washers, 3 pins (1 short for wedge side, 2 long), 2 blade bearing washers, 1 plexiglass wedge, 1.25" of 3/32" brass tube that you can cut and use to reinforce the pin holes in your scales.
The wedge blank is going to be a choice of white or smoke gray clear plexiglass, beveled. You will need to contour it to your scales and drill a hole. I will make it oversize so depending on which end of the wedge you use you'll be able to make your final wedge thicker/thinner.
The pins/washers are going to be a set of my hand made brass ones. I will include 3 pins just in case you want to make 3 pin scales or you can use it for practice if only making 2 pin scales.
I resawed cocobolo, yellowheart, purpleheart and kingwood scale blanks and got a better yield than I thought. So I am reducing the cost of the blanks to $10 for cocobolo and $8 for the rest to reflect my lower cost.
Let me know if this fits with your desire to give scale making a try.
If there is no interest then please disregard this offer.

Thanked: 8Great service Vlad.
In 20 years time newbies will be asking questions like, "what happened to all the plastic handled ones ?"

I may be later on down the line, but for now I just want to perfect my honing technique before moving on to wood. However, eventually I will move on and this would be the perfect starter for me. Great idea Vlad!

I sent a PM to all those expressing interest. I am putting together about 10 kits right now for the orders that I received, ready to ship Monday/Tuesday. The woods that I have ready to go are cocobolo, bloodwood, purpleheart, yellowheart and kingwood.
The kingwood has a fine striped grain pattern that is the usual for scales, same one as used on TI Kingwood Razors. The larger pattern that I used on the test scales is also available if anyone wants it. These are 15/16" wide because they are resawn from the side of the plank. Enough to fit large 8/8 W&B scales but with no room to spare. Smaller scales will fit with a margin for error.
The bloodwood color is a dark red with red/orange stripes and is a very nice wood for scales. I am working on a set right now.
Prices are $20 for cocobolo kits and $18 for the rest. Shipping is $5 for US/Canada and $8 for Europe. I can ship 4 kits in the one package for the same one kit shipping price.
If you want me to include your order in the same batch just PM me for what you want and I will send you a paypal invoice for the total.

Once You Go Black ...
Vlad says he needs to see more interest in Ebony Wood for scales or boxes before he can pick some up for us so I'm out here to give you guys the spurs. If you're thinking about some of that beautiful and moisture resistant material, please step up to the plate and ask for some.

Just ordered my cocobolo kit from him. It'll be fun to work with wood for a change. Tried stone once.....maybe I'll be able to make scales out of that sometime as wel.....hmm....it's worth a thought.
