Yahooo! Got the DD Goldedge for restoration and what a surpise!
Had to brag about this one. I won a DD Goldedge for $32.50, including S&H, a week ago. What I thought I was getting was a somewhat rusted 5/8 DD Goldedge. Here are the original photos from the auction:
Here is what I got.
The orange stuff in the original photos is actually remnants of gold plating on the tang, I thought it was rust. The blade is a hairline under 6/8. A small nick at the toe, about 1/64", no hone wear and a crisp square point. Some pits are to be found under the tarnish but I think they will sand out. Scales are in beatutiful condition except for a tiny chipout 1/32" deep by 1/4" long right along the edge at the pivot end. I won't use them except for the brass anyway. This one will probably be the one to wear the ebony scales.
It has been a while since I got a pleasant surprise on e-bay.

That's a nice win there Vlad. It will be great to see the magic you've done on it when you're finished.

Nice for you Vlad. that's a pretty decent win. I've already decided that the duckies aren't for me since the prices are too high. But that price for that razor is pretty good. I expect that you'll be restoring the gold layering on it like you did to another one?

Oh great, yet another vlad restoration for me to bid on and not win...
/sigh
I'll go console myself with the NOS revisor I got from Gary while I wait for honemeister Joe to put the finishing touches on my W&B.

I will have to see how the restoration of the blade goes. It is a very delicate grind so I will have to go extra slow and easy on it. The pitting will be a pain to get out. Can't just hunker down for 9 hours of sanding like the W&B. That much sanding will probably grid enough of the metal off to crack the blade.
I just cracked a full hollow blade that I was restoring so I will give myself a few days off by working on nice heavy W&B blades to regain confidence. So, I will have a few days to think over what I am going to do with this one.
Alexander, if the blade restores fine then I will restore the gold plating on the tang and tail.
Nenad, the scales do have a small chip that I can sand out and polish but I am dying to make a nice ebony set for a goldedge. I have another GE on its way to me that cost me more than double, it was listed as 6/8. I might use it's scales for the brass inlays.
On the other hand, I can always make my own brass inlays and save these scales for the future. I am not a fan of celluloid. It has a limited shelf life and even in the best conditions will start to decompose over time. So the original scales won't last as long as my custom ones.

I think a set of Sterling Silver bolster inlays would look super nice on Ebony scales personally.

Brass or copper can be silver plated. Since I put a coat of CA over the inlays the plating won't rub off so it is a viable option.
Silver might look nice but it won't go as well as brass with the gold plated tang. The brass can also be gold plated for a perfect match to the tang.
