Default When cleaning an old razor...?

When cleaning an old razor, do you recommend removing the scales to clean and putting them back on or just clean around them?

For me, it depends on how much corrosion is around the pivot. If it's minimal, and light, I'll leave the scales on. If it needs a bit more attention (most of the time), I'll take them off.
