Thanked: 2Scale resoration questions.
I have a couple questions, I am doing a full restoration on a razor, its my first one ever and I had some questions about the scales.
Does anyone have experience or knowledge in using purple heart wood? because I would like to know some different coating that I could use on them when I get them cut and sanded and what would look the best on a colored wood like that.
I was also wondering which type of metal I should use for the pins. Does it have to do with the look of the wood and or razor? and where can I get these rods without having to order them offline.
I also was wondering if you use stainless steel washers for the nickle silver rod or if they have a special nickle silver washer? and what kind of washers are they?
Thank you everyone, Once I get this done once i'll have it down.

Thanked: 1263Theres a few different ways you can finish the wood...check out the WIKI but the latest and greatest seems to be CA (Gorilla Glue) Personally I haven't tried it yet as I'm not a big wood guy but plan to soon For the pins you can use brass or nickel silver in 1/16" which can usually be found at hobby shops. For the washers you can use stainless or brass in #0...you can find these on line at microfasteners.com.

Thanked: 13245Purpleheart is one of those woods
Very easy to finish, takes near any product well...CA is like Cat said, a good choice, Wipe on Poly is very good and very easy, or even some of the gun finishes like Tru-oil...
You can change the depth of the Purple color with heat also, heat the wood and it will darken in the shade of Purple..
BTW I saw you mentioned that you were from Spokane in another thread

Thanked: 13245An electric heat gun is the easiest to control, but the oven set at about 150-175 works also, but it is harder to control the outcome...
