Default Inherited a straight razor. Needs restoration

    Hello all,

I've been a member of SRP for a year now, but have been mostly lurking off and on. About a year ago, I thought I would attempt a dabble into straight razor shaving after reading the wiki here and some stories, so I got one of those disposable Dovo Shavette razors. Best shave of my life. I haven't been back since. A few months ago, I told my in-laws what I was using and they told me they have my wife's great grandfather's razor. It needs restoration, but they'd like me to have it if there's a chance I could use it once again. They sent it to me and it does, if fact, need some restoration. I know absolutely nothing about restoring a razor, nor do I have the tools to do this. I called Straight Razor Designs today. I think I spoke with Don(?) He recommended I post an inquiry here for some advice about who to talk with about getting this razor restored. Could someone please post a recommendation about who to talk with. Or if you do restorations, could you please PM me or post here and we can talk? I took a few pictures of the razor so you can get an idea of its condition. I'll try to answer any questions as best I can, but I am very much a novice at this. My only experience has been with the Shavette.

    Thank you
    Elie

There are several members that restore razors, I would suggest checking out the member services area here Member Services - Straight Razor Place Classifieds

That one surely looks like a winner. It will take some work and a new bevel, but has lots of meat left on the bone, from the pics! Congrats!!

Doesn't look like it should be hard to fix up... provided the discoloration is as superficial as it seems in the photos, that should turn out to be a very nice razor! Although time and water have stained it, it looks like the previous owner was careful with it.

OVB stands for "Our Very Best" and Hibbard, Spencer and Bartlett were well known cutlery makers/distributors in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. Maybe longer lived but I'm too lazy to go to Goin's. Their pocket knives from back then are collectible. Ought to be a good shaver.
Be careful how you treat people on your way up, you may meet them again on your way back down.

    Default Found a guy

Thanks all. Looks like I found a guy willing to do this. I'll be getting it out on Friday and we'll see how it looks and works restored. Got Glenn at Gem Star. Seem satisfied he's going to do as good a job as can be done.

Yeah, I heard somewhere that he does OK work.
    Sorry Glen.
