Thanked: 1Breaking into restoration/ finding razors in need of TLC
Good morning from Texas gentlemen!
My name is Austin, I am a college student from Texas and I having been learning about straight shaving for the last year and a half, shaving for the last month, a member of SRP for a few weeks and I have the bug in a bad way My first and only razor is Smith Brothers Razor that Maximillian did an excellent job restoring and after seeing what can be done firsthand and spending a lot of time reading up on it I have decided I want to learn how to rescue and restore razors too. My dad is a jeweler so I have a workspace and all the tools needed to do the job right, but I need razors to learn with. SRP has got to be the largest and I know the most helpful community of shaving enthusiasts there so I figured what better place to look than here. If any of the community has any interest in helping a young man learn how to do this I could use any old razors that you don't have any use for and any restoration tricks you may have learned! Thanks for reading and I hope your week is starting well.

Thanked: 3795If you are asking for help, that's what this place is all about. Do a lot of reading in the resources available here and ask questions about anything and everything razor related.
If you are asking for people to give you razors, I consider that to be an inappropriate use for this forum. You can find lots of cheap razors for restoration on eBay.

I was hoping you had a few you could send me. Honestly we are all in a constant search mode around here. Join the hunt and hit ebay, the junk and antique shops and any flea market, estate sale or whatever. They are everywhere,if you can find them.
It is easier to fool people than to convince them they have been fooled. Twain

Thanked: 2209Perhaps the best advice I can give you is to learn what not to buy. To many guys buy razors that have excessive hone wear along the spine or major rusting along the edge and they completely fail to check for a cracked blade. Always demand excellent pics from sellers or else reduce your bid significantly. I once bought a lot of 40+ razors from Ebay that had fuzzy pics....most of them turned out to be junk!
Hope this helps,Randolph Tuttle, a SRP Mentor for residents of Minnesota & western Wisconsin

the best advise is too look at them close
I agree with what was said above the most important issue it to look them over carefully before buying, especially if your paying more than a couple bucks for them. if the photos are small and not well done there is often a reason. Ask for better ones if they dont come pass on that one. I have gotten a couple in the past few weeks quite reasonable, unfortunately I had to take a coupe junkers to get them. Always a price to pay.
