Thread: Stone for Scales?

Hey,

Has anyone thought of carved/finished "soap stone" for scales, i've done some work with soap stone, i know i could make beautiful scales out of it. just wondering if anyone has heard or used such? and how did it turn out? was it too heavy compared to the razor?

The balance is always a consideration, some people/companies just bypass that and make up excuses, but when you shave an unbalanced razor it isn't fun...
But the worst is stropping them, that is when you really notice the balance on a razor because the razor is full open....

With a good heavy wedge, you can push the weight envelope quite a bit and also the actual design of the scales can help with shifting the weight around too...

Are you referring to a heavy spacer wedge or a heavy razor with a wedgy grind?

Whoops !!! hehehe Lee yer right I meant the Razor good catch there...

I actually have a heavy scaled razor with a rounded off tang and I refuse to use it until I rescale. It isn't as out of balance as stone might be, but right now it tries to rotate away from your face as you shave and the tang allows little gription. (like my new word?)

Yeah i definitely know what you mean, gription was very descriptive. I was thinking about making a "Japanese style" razor (if thats the right name for it) and then use soap stone to make a protective "sheath" for it after... i have the resources and patience to do it but not the time yet. I'm still in the theoretical stage.

I don't know the balance preferences for a Japanese style razor, but I do have a couple and I prefer the one with a slightly lighter handle, The heavier of mine has a very heavy handle to blade ratio. Plus Japanese style generally don't have huge handles so that should keep the weight down. I like soap stone, but seem to remember that certain soft stones will etch with contact to water. I don't remember all of the specifics, but you may want to look into it.

I haven't seen that before. That is one of the best razors I have ever seen!
