Default Hand cleaning old razors, old crud and dust

I've been fortunate enough to get a hold of a few very old and interesting horn scaled razors.
I was working on one last night with some autosol on a rag, just cleaning it by hand to
assess the condition of the razor but noticed a lot of filthy old dust as I was giving it a little
work-over. I was not wearing a respiratory system at the time, and it did not feel very
comfortable, so I put it away for the moment. I have not noticed much dust hand cleaning before, perhaps this one was unusually cruddy.

I was wondering what you guys do in cases like this? Wearing a respiratory system is an option ofc, but perhaps the problem could be solved with some cleaning with some fluids or what? A brushing under water or alcohol maybe? Any thoughts guys?

I don't think that is something I've ever experienced before. I typically use MAAS when working by hand. On the buffers I always wear a respirator.
