I recently found two straight razors at a local shop. Both razors are in relatively good condition. One is a Gotta 120 super fine straight razor and the other is a Solingen. The Gotta has the gold etching and the Solingen has an etching on it as well. How do I clean these razors without using something abrasive so as not to remove the etching. Name: iphone 4-28 069.jpg

I believe that holi4pirating had a good post on this a couple weeks ago in the workshop. If I wasn't using tapatalk I'd link it for you. Do a search on "new resto technique"

While using a tumbler for light clean is good (post: new resto tech). I don't think it will help with trying to save the goldwash.
You could tape off the area then clean it up or you could just spot clean the worst spots. Either way it's almost impossible to do a complete cleaning with out damaging the gold wash.
You just have to decide, do you want the goldwash more then a clean razor. For me, it depends on a condition of the blade to start with. If it's not in bad condition I tend to try and safe the goldwash.

    Here is my thread: http://straightrazorpalace.com/works...tml?highlight=

It will take off gold wash and "frosting"/acid-wash/acid-etch/whatever that is (can't tell if that's what's on the first blade). You could tape over those things, or just be extremely careful to avoid them. The method is gentle enough that, if you keep the pressure light, you'll leave no scratches behind, so that's nice. I think it's the best and fastest way to give a surface cleaning (of methods that I currently know of).

If in doubt, do less rather than more. You can always try more later.
