    Default Are these restorable?

I'm about to buy this Filarmonica, but I'm doubting if it can be restored. There's some rust near the edge. The smile doesn't look too bad.

I also have found this Marsil Brothers &co. (Sheffield) But I think I'll wait for the time I have to travel to the town where they sell it to see it.

That thread has a bit of info in there

It is really hard for one of us to just look at a razor a determine it's real potential from a pic...

The real question is, can I restore it???? The Filli I would say yes I could, don't know if you can and the smile is normal

the Marsil is a bit more of a challenge as the black marks could go deep, plus it has a bit of toe wear that will always be there, so that becomes more of a "could I make it a shaver" question,,, again I would say yes, but don't know how good I could make it look...

This is from a pic and of course I can't even see the whole razor

Keep in mind I do restores professionally and look at things a bit different then most people... so take my opinion with a grain of salt

I have seen some of your work, and it's really amazing.

I'll grab the Filli, and maybe just clean it, to do the proper restoration when I've learnt a little more. Right now I'm working on a Bourdier (from Thiers, France) got it really cheap at a flea market, and wasn't in very bad shape. I've cleaned the rust, sanded to clean the pitting, and realized that I should've sanded a lot more That's how you learn, I think.

I was just looking for a little push to get the Filli.

I think another question is "restored to what?" You can do a surface clean and hone, you can do a buffing to remove staining and reduce pitting, you can try to get out all the pitting and make a razor look brand new, or anything in between. For those razors, you can definitely do the surface clean, remove at least some of the staining and pitting, but beyond that it gets hard to tell just looking at photos, and sometimes you can't even tell until you start. My typical advice is to try the surface cleaning (MAAS and synthetic steel wool is my go-to) and then see what you think.

BTW, maybe it's just me, but the smile on the Filly looks to me to be accentuated by heavier hone wear at the toe. Filly's I have seen usually have a smile, but that one looks like it has more than the normal.

PS - I would def buy the Marsh just cause it's a cool razor.
