Thanked: 0Supplies
I've been able to get a few things for restoration from the local Home Depot, like a rotary tool and 600 grit sandpaper, but for the most part I can't find the things to get my ebay razors into shaving shape. I can't find any maas, or sandpaper finer than 600 grit, and I can't find any sanding discs for my dremel. There are plenty of sources online, but I don't really know who to trust. Where do you guys get your stuff?

Maas from Wal Mart. A good hobby store will have finer grades of abrasive paper, or a place that deals in auto body supplies (paint, wet sanding papers, etc.). What's wrong with buying online? There are many sources... [riogrande] is one. [Handamerican] is another.

go to your local hardware store:
- buy 100grit / 220 / 400 /600 sand paper
go to your local auto body store (pep boys for example)
- buy 800/ 1000/ 2000
you will need alot of sandpaper, especially in the lower grits as thats where you will do most of the hard work getting the blades cleaned of black gunk/rust/pitting
do you have a small 1/2inch sanding attachment with your dremel? usually they come with the dremel when you buy it. put that on your dremel. remove the sandpaper cone that comes with the attachement as it will be too coarse. get a piece of double sided tape and put it around the bare sanding attachement piece...usually its rubber. cut a piece of sandpaper from the grit u are going to use. wrap it around the dremel rubber part (the tape is there to hold it on). make sure there isn't alot of extra overlapping and make sure the leading edge of the paper is under the trailing edge where they start to overlap or make them fit just right. turn on the dremel and go to work make sure u don't push too hard and watch for the edge of the blade as the dremel will chip it up real quick if u catch it going the wrong direction.
maas at walmart or you can definitely buy it online.
if you want higher grit sandpapers usually u have to buy those online also at places listed by above posters.
have fun and be careful don't hurt yourself. your fingers are going to be dead tired after hours and hours of sanding...great stuff

Thanked: 0Thanks everyone, especially jscott, for the advice. My mom told me I'd get carpal tunnel ever since I got a computer. Maybe she should be keeping me away from sandpaper instead

I like Flitz which I find at Ace Hardware. There is some metal polish in a silver container at Target that works ok. Semichrome is great stuff but a bit harder to find and a little more expensive.
Napa Auto has sandpaper up to 2000 grit maybe more.

Check out riogrande.com and widgetsupply.com. Both have hard to find stuff for dremels, and riogrande has the radial bristle discs that Bill Ellis swears by. You can't get a much better recommendation than that.

Thanked: 16Rio Grande Supply
I received Bill's new restoration CD and happen to live in Albuquerque, the home of RioGrande Jewelry Supply. They advertise wholesale only both on their storefront and on their website. Do you folks have wholesale licenses?
Back to the original post. I obtain Flitz at Ace and my higher grit sandpapers at Autozone. While the local sources are rather limited on dremel attachments. I found

through Google but I haven't tried them yet. I've been making good use of the 2 grades of dremel fabric wheels available at Lowes. Thus far I haven't had to go to sandpaper, although my latest eBay purchase (not yet delivered, item 300015720004), shows some rather pronounced scratches.

Widgetsupply has the absolute best, fastest service I've encountered yet. That's the only place I've been able to find 400 grit flapwheels, which are awesome for working on razors. If you're careful, and use a light touch, you can put a near factory satin finish on a blade with one.

Yesterday, I ordered 3x120, 3x240 and 3x400 in 1.5x0.5". How many blades can one of those go through and how long does it take per grit per size on average?
P.S. I'm a BIG fan of satin-finish
