Deer Antler for a Wedge?
Ok, I've heard of using bone for a wedge, but how about Deer Antler? I thought I'd ask before I tried it, is there anything that I'd have to treat it with to use it? Or would it be ok to just shape it out and go to town? Any advice you all have would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance. Blake

Thanked: 13245Just make sure it is well dried before you start, be careful about the softer inner part try not to use it, but if you must then I would seal it with CA (super glue) first so that it is even...
Are you planning on just cutting off a wafer and then shaping from there????

Yes, was actually planning on splitting it down the middle into about an 1/8th inch section and shaping it that way, but from what you're saying maybe it would be better to get as close to the edge as possible?

Thanked: 13245Let me seriously look at some tomorrow, I have a set of Whitetails out there someplace and some Elk and Mulies, I know what I am thinking, but I haven't ever used them myself for wedges... I hate giving any advice if I haven't done it myself...

Thanked: 1936I had sent you a reply, but don't see it here...huh? I have worked with antler on several things from razors to knives and it's a great natural media. As Glen mentioned, keep away from the spongy inner material. If the antler has cured for 6 months or so, you will be good to go. I don't use anything for a finish on it as it polishes up quite nicely, just like a fingernail can. To bring out a great luster, Renaissance wax works great! As for wedges, as long as you don't use any of the spongy material you will be great. Secondly, don't drill your pin holes where they are real tight to the pin, leave the pin enough room to "expand" so that it won't split the wedge or scales. Take your time on the pinning and you will learn that antler is a great media to work with.
