Default Polishing old metal to look new again

I will be getting a few DE's for my wife they are older and need some TLC so that they look new again. The thought that someoen she doesnt know was using the same razor in 1962 might freak her out a little if it doesnt at least look new. I have no idea what I need to do to get old soap scum off and polish up the metal so it looks reasonably unused.

    Any ideas?

I have metal polish for my guns, but I think it will take more than that...sand paper, fine steel wool??? Im sort of clueless here.

    JL,

As far as soap scum - an old toothbrush and
some bathroom cleaner for bathtubs and showers.
For polishing I'm sure the same stuff such as Maas
that these guys use on straight blades would work
just fine. A little scrubbing and elbow grease and the
    DE should look like new.

    JL,

I believe so. Probably Wal Mart as well.
I believe that a lot of this stuff is liquid.

No doubt better advise will come in on
the polishing stuff. But for the soap scum
and other build up. Some sort of bathroor
cleaner. Let the razor soak a while and
scrub with a hard bristle tooth brush -
    or similar type small brush.

I'd go lightly with any polishing compound because most of those DE's are probably base metal with a nickle plate on it and it is probably already thin.

    JL,

Try using Soft Scrub w/ Bleach. You don't add bleach, it's in the product. Give the razor a thorough scrubbing with the Soft Scrub and an old toothbrush, then drop it in lightly boiling water for about 10 minutes. Then repeat with the Soft Scrub followed by a good rinse in hot water. That should put you back into business.

BTW, if you notice the razors need a bit of "grease", dip them in baby oil, then rinse in hot water, i.e., hold them under a running tap for a bit. Should put everything back in order.
