    Default Cracked Ivory Scales

    Guys,

I received a Dorko MoSoDo in the post today and found that one of the scales has a crack right through at the pivot. I really, really don't want to rescale this one. The scales are the reason I purchased this. Is there a method of repairing these scales without removing them. I assume these are ivory scales, please correct me if I'm wrong.

The second pic shows the crack across the pivot, and the other two hopefully show why I don't want to lose the scales.

    TIA

    Stu

You can inlay with thin aluminum or may be brass that will hold the scales together. Just do it in the pin area not the whole length of the scales.

    They are Celluloid,,
Unfortunately Celluloid is made of different formulas, most cannot be glued, some can be fused with Acetone, and still others do OK with Epoxy and super glue...

You just have to try... and see if anything works with that set...

The worst spot for trying any repair is of course the pivot as it is the most stressed part of the scales...

Edit: after a second look it almost appears in that pic that perhaps a repair has already been tried

    What G said.

I have a question, does the pivot feel loose?
I have couple of razors that have cracked scales that seem sound despite their appearance. I say if the pivot is tight you might want to secure with a little epoxy and hope for the best.

On the plus side imitation ivory is available and there are posts about transferring.

The pivot is slightly loose just as you lift it out of the scales, but then as you open the blade it gets tighter. I would say almost too tight, which might have been the reason it cracked to begin with. This fact gives me the feeling that a little bit of glue will not hold for long.

Might give a dab of glue on it, if that doesn't work, off to the archives for some inlay removal and reinstatement tips.

    Default Bugger!!!!

The razor decided for me, opened it slowly to try some CA on the inside of the scale and the razor cracked off at the pivot, both sides.

Anyone know where the inlay threads/tips are?

I know acetone is popular for inlay removal but I just let the scale warp in some simmering water & the inlay peels off.
If you're going to use acrylic, Selleys makes a plastics glue that works well .

Yep, that's it thanks Oz. Looks like I'm in for a bit of work. Got two other restores on the go at the moment, last thing I wanted was another. Anyway, I love a challenge.

Thanks to all those who offered advice on this one.

If I had a nickle for every time I broke a scale I could buy a soda pop & maybe a candy bar...that blade would look good in some blonde horn. I'd keep the scales for a pattern if you ever get into making scales.

Shooter, I had the same thought but horn is tricky to find here in Australia. I have got some nice pieces of timber but still haven't decided yet. Just finished a set in Purple Heart for a Gotta with Glen's CA method.
