Thanks guys, I just took the 36 hour picture, but I am late for work will post it as soon as I get home, or come back on my lunch.
It is still working, even though it is a slow process. I have been rinsing with hot water then wiping it down with an old towel to dry it and see what has been removed.

This is looking more and more like a positive (and very handy!) result.

    Mick,
the blade is not shiny by any means, but the majority of the rust and patina are gone, but a nice even dull finish with pitting.
Now to research this flash rust, so this time is not wasted once it is out.
Hopefully I can have it shave ready by Sunday

The way that one has come up I'd be curious how it would work on an otherwise good item with just a bit of surface rust. I'm also curious what it would do to etching.

mick I will check to see if I have anything with etching in bad shape to throw in the jar. and If it removes large amounts of rust over a period of a few days I think something with just a little but of rust would probably be gone by the 12 - 24 hour mark. But it doesn't appear to be eating away at the good metal which makes me happy.

Reminds me of the time we used coca cola to clean brass coins, bolts and nuts. Do molasses work better?

Coca Cola would eat the coins, nus and bolts if left in there for to long. So far the only thing missing from this blade is the rust. I am using regular old Brer Rabbit Full Flavor molasses.
