Thread: Permanent fix for silver inlay on celluloid?

Like a maroon, I didn't take before pictures. Lynn just sent this razor back (honed up awesome, I might add), so he can vouch for the fact that the inlay was coming up at the toe.

I'd been around and around on how to fix it. I tried a tiny blob of epoxy putty, superglue, even a microdrop or two of acetone. Nothing made the thing stay down. The problem was that it wasn't coming up so much that it was easy to get at the underside of the metal.

After I got it back from Lynn, I stared at it a bit, then got desperate. You see, I really want to shave with this tomorrow.

So I grabbed my battery powered, slow-heating soldering iron and my magnifying lamp and set to delicate work. I toggled the iron off and on, holding it on longer and longer until I just saw the silver sink down into the celluloid. What do you know? It stayed down! But the edges around the metal got a bit bubbly, so I glued some sandpaper to a toothpick and polished it all down.

So. Things are much happier now. However, I'd really like to just seal the sucker down. Does anyone know of anything that'd do that? Some kinda clearcoat?

I've not tried it for something like this, but the first thing that comes to my mind is renwax.
