Default beginner ? about cleaning blade

i know that abrasive polishes can damage antique blades so what is the best way to remove dirt and scuff marks from the steel?

Maas is much favoured for lighter damage. For deeper work, wet'n'dry sandpaper is a way to go.

The SRP wiki has great restoration info, have a look for more pointers. Best of luck, and let us hear (and see) how it goes.

As long as there's no goldwash or etching that you don't want to lose then you'd be fine with a polish that has a mild abrassive. Alot of folks around here like MAAS and myself I use good ole Mothers Aluminum Polish.
