    Default Inlaying?

I have a box that I believe was at one time a cutlery case from the 20's-30's, wich has seen its better days. I sanded it down to get rid of the minor scratches/imperfections, and stained it a darker color to hide these imperfections. It is by all means a bueatiful box as it is now, and I could just put a couple finish coats of varnish on it and be done, but I want to add a personal twist to this box. Do any of you have any experience or suggestions when it comes to designing, inlaying, or links that will help with the basics? I am also open to and would love design suggestions! I am of German/Irish heritage and have been googling inlayed furniture examples, with no success.

    Thanks
    Louis.

I would search for stringed instrument sites dealing with inlay, luthiers are some of the most talented inlay artist. I would also look at marquetry web sites.

As for advise, I would say keep to a simple design.

These two pages are by Frank Ford, his work methods are well thought out and work well, they could be adapted to any inlay work. He has some great ideas on tooling and methods if you search his site.

Grizzley has a Guitarmaking section in their catalogue, with lots of inlays. Also try Musicmaker Kits, in Stillwater, MN - they have sound hole round lazer cut inlays.

I have found these folks to be of service for the items I buy. Here is their web page for inlays. Until it is finished, get their printed catalog which will have much of what you may want.Masecraft shell inlays

Yes these folks carry a huge selection of inlay materials as well as pre-cut inlay designs. I would also suggest you give them a look, great guys to deal with.
