Also, playing heavily into my decision to keep or not, I don't have a set of hones, so I'd have to send it out to get it sharp, which of course cuts into any small profit margin there would be.

Oil it up no matter what you do to help stop the corrosion.

    Just my $.02........

The first question to be answered is how badly is the edge rusted? If the rust goes all the way thru then you have some major edge repair to do. To answer that question use the sandpaper as a honing surface, 320 - 500 grit, and start honing with 3 layers of tape with pressure or raise the spine a bit and hone till all of the rusted edge is gone. Then look to see if you have some "craters" in the bevel. If so continue til they are gone. This is just for starters.

or send it out for honing.......

IMHO, that razor needs regrinding. I would not accept the task of honing it as is.

Educate me Randy. Why does it need regrinding?

Because of the extreme hone wear. That amount of steel removed from the spine will make the angle of the blade so shallow that the bevel will be very wide and consequently very weak. Not to mention it will be a bear to hone that wide of a bevel.

Updated pictures. I used 220 because I had 220 and 400 and 220 is where I'm starting on this blade.

The edge looks great! No Swiss cheese, and no pitting even on first 1/8" of blade.

Good! Now the next step is to get rid of that active rust on the blade before you do any more honing.

Ok, used marker as layout fluid and three layers of tape to see where I'd be at a far as a bevel without regrinding. Here's what it looks like. Opinions?

3 layers of tape is the key. With that you should be ok. It is still a wide bevel but it can be honed.

How narrow should it be? Half that?
