    Default Restoration Supplies

So in a few weeks I'll be buying all the stuff I need for restoring razors, bar a few items.

Firstly, anyone know where I can get the rods and washers in Aus? Like, does bunnings carry something I can use?

Secondly, I noticed people showing off new scales on here, and I'm wondering if anywhere sells scales by themselves?

    Cheers!

The pins are easy to get your hands onto, just nick down to your local hobby store and they should have some 1/16" brass rod that is a good start for pins. The washers are available in Aus but they are much cheaper to get from Microfasteners in the US. You will need some size 0 brass washers for the external washers and some size 0 wide washers for the internal (spacer) washers. You may as well pick up some small set screws and nuts as they are really handy for getting the wedge just right even if you end up using traditional pinning to finish.

There are a number of suppliers overseas that sell 'ready-made' scales, although I haven't used them, but none that I know of in Aus. Its a bit of a bugger, you basically have to order averything in from either europe or US.

You might also think about picking up a small ball peen or riveting hammer for pinning.

    Hope this helps.

Those washers aren't too expensive either!

Also, how small is a small ball pein? 16oz do it?

You want a 4oz ball hammer This is the one i got. - not in Australia but cheap as chips and it came in 3 days
This one is still available 4oz Hammer

Bunnings only go down to a 8oz. You can use an 8oz but you run the risk damaging your scales

And i got my washers from Microfasteners.com (Again not in Australia but cheap and fast delivery)
    Direct Link to washers

    You will want
    FWB0 Flat Washers - Brass $ 3.80
    FWBW0 Flat Washers - Brass $ 4.40

The 1/16" Brass rod i got from a local hobby shop. I think it was $1.50 for 30cm

You can get pre made scales here but you would be surprised how easy they are to make yourself.

Flush cutters are good, A dremel to sand the brass rod. you could do it by hand or use a bench sander but i use a dremel in a dremel multi vise

An anvil style vice available from bunnings, mine was worth about $20 or something

The dremel could also be used to remove the old pins or you can use a drill press. i have used both and i think the drill press might be a little easier but both work.

Really the list could go on forever but the above are really the minimal that you need.

Will the dremel stylus do the trick? It looks funky and it's in my price range.

Also I found this if anyone's interested http://www.theinvisibleedge.co.uk/ra...ndpinkits.html they have some funky scales

I have a 4 ounce ball peen and a 2 ounce riveting hammer. I just use a el' cheapo claw hammer for an anvil.

I have a couple of ball peins - one is the smallest that Bunnings have (8oz?) and the other is about twice the size.
I use the bigger of the two to start the peining process and the smaller to finish off.
I've also got one of those little anvils from ozmestore1 on EBay. Thay have some fantastic stuff and they are in Adelaide so postage is pretty quick and mostly free IIRC. I also got some 2mm HSS drill bits with 5mm shanks from them for unpinning in my drill press and they work great - no flex or running off the pins onto the scales.
I just got all the washers I needed from Microfasteners, including nylon ones that I have used as thrust washers on my clear scales.
As for scales I got a heap of acrylic strips from the markets here in Bris for very little money. Some of it actually looks like bone - well I suppose it doesn't, but it is that colour.
PM me your address and I'll send you some brazing rod - I got a heap of it from a welding supplier - more than I'll ever use
