I'd throw the scales away - too suspicious. You can get the inlays off the scales yourself - acetone should do it.
I didn't even think of that... oh well, not too big of a deal I suppose. So acetone, huh? Right on. I guess I'll start tearing it down. Are those inlays just glued on? Any ideas how I can get them put back on flush with the surface of some new scales? That's the only part of the whole thing that I can't really figure out.

Have to agree with Gugi. The seller probably isnt an expert on razors or plastics and to the everage Joe ebay seller they do appear to be in excellent condition for a used vintage razor.

Here is another helpful link about using Acetone to glue and un-glue the inlays:

Good things, guys... thanks. I figure acetone should work with acrylic or most other plastics just about the same way. Anyone know of any type of material to use for the scales that may look roughly the same as celluloid?

I'd say that you should try to find a translucent dark green acrylic

I think black G10 or go opposite and go ghost G10 for contrast.

I got an Otto V Deustch this week in slightly better condition than yours.

Dark green acrylic scales is the way to go. The original translucent dark green scales is simply an awesome look, and IMO if you can replicate the original then you should. The photos don't do justice to how pretty the razor is.

There was a very nicely restored one that went for about half that two weeks ago. It got up to $100 and then there was a bidding war between two people and I thought it was just two people getting silly. Maybe not.

Me I'm happy that I paid about what the OP paid for his. No intentions of a re-sale. I just think that it is a very pretty razor and I got a bad case of the "me wants".
