    I just thought i would throw this out there but the Stir sticks that you get when you buy a gallon of paint are made of bamboo. My Brother Inlaw made scales from them and they turned out well. Just a cheap suggestion.

    Asian gardining centers carry Giant bamboo sections.you will need to mill them yourself tho.

    Just made a discovery while emptying out the dish washer,no joke ck it out.
    My wife has these bamboo tools she uses,get them at any asian store,are called rice paddles,are like 99cents,plenty of material for scales.

    I saw that you already worked down the flooring piece, but our kitchen utensils are made of bamboo. If I didn't have a slab of flooring & cutting board out in the shop, we could be short a piece or two...
