Warped horn scales
As i have said for about 2 weeks now, i have a Sheffield razor, it came tarnished, rusted, and heavily pitted. I have finally finished with the low grit sanding. I was looking at the original horn scales, there very elegant and i would like to use them on the finished razor, but there wrapped. Since they are thick scales, i was considering sanding the inside to make room for the razor.

Thanked: 13245Horn is also pretty easy to straighten,,,
Two pieces of Oak 7x3x1/2 is what I uses as a press, they have multiple holes drilled through them where the scales would sit if placed in there...
Two clamps complete the press, I lightly clamp the scales in there and use the Shot-o-Steam iron to hit them with steam and heat.. The thickness of the Oak keeps the heat from getting too hot and I tighten the clamps after each application of steam... I hit them a few extra times after I am tight then set them aside for a FULL 24 hours... This normally works very well...
If you need a pic of the set up I can take one later tonightLast edited by gssixgun; 09-03-2011 at 02:44 AM.

if you would not mind i would like that. Also i should say i did a getto repair on the razor, it made many cracks/wells in the scales so i filled the holes with krazy glue, so i am guessing all my work will be ruined with the steam.

Thanked: 13245No problem I have been meaning to do a thread anyway...
I don't know about the Glue, I have always used epoxy to fill worm holes, but I do that after the straightening, look at it this way, if it pops it loose then refill with epoxy after
There are a few Riflestock supplies that are excellent for this, the Precolored Acra-Bed Epoxy is excellent but a bit pricy...
I found some Black colored epoxy at Home Depot I used on a few of the Kamisori rebuilds that worked well too...
