Powder on Norton
On Billy's new CD (video) he talks about an abrasive powder he puts on norton before honing. Has anyone discovered where to purchase this powder?

I haven't seen the video, but might it not be lapping compound, to get the stone flat? If so, it doesn't stay on the norton, but rather, you wash it off.

I just got the disk out and he uses "Rottenstone". He spreads it on the 4K side and states it works on the very edge.

Oh, ok. Rottenstone is sorta like a Nagura, used for making slurry. I don't think it actually cuts, itself. Just makes the stone cut faster by making a slurry. Bill may be doing something different, but I think the Rottenstone is just for making a slurry. Rottenstone is often used by woodworkers for fine sanding on their projects and is, I believe, slightly more cost-effective than the artificial Nagura stones.

I believe you can buy Rottenstone wherever woodworking supplies are sold. (I usually buy from Lee Valley Tools and Woodcraft.com...I'm pretty sure both of those places sell it)

Thanked: 2209Rottenstone is decaying limestone. It is an abrasive. It can be used as an abrasive on a paddle strop. It is also extremely fine and breaks down with use to a smaller size. I have not tried using it for a slurry but why not try it?
