Thread: Oil for blades!!!

Hey yall.. i have one little question! i really need to get some oil to put on my blades when I dont use them because a few that i have are damn near 200 years old! I really dont want them to rust.. what is the best brand and where can I find them in the Houston area?? This is a good question for you Sharptonn!!!!!

I use mineral oil also known as baby oil the unsented stuff.

Just checked my collection after 5 months, still beautiful with mineral oil, covered in cloth in a cigar box.

I've been using a light coat of T&H pre-shave oil on my carbon steel blades for short-term storage in a more humid environment. Seems to work well, so far. If anyone sees a problem with using this rather than light mineral oil, please advise...

"Pre-shave oil" is usually plant-based oil -- almond oil, olive oil, etc. Check the ingredients. It will eventually harden and/or go rancid due to oxidation.

Mineral oil (or baby oil, SAE 10W30, etc) will last longer without degrading.

JimmyHad pointed me in the direction of RIG Gun grease applied with a silicone imprenated cloth for long term storage. It makes a lot of sense, gun people have been fussy about their steel for a long time. I did use mineral oil on my razors and just looked at them after a period of 2 years. The razors looked ok but after 2 years it no longer felt like oil.

I use white petrolatum (vaseline) on my blades.

I posted the same question a while back, and I ended up using mineral oil that I found in Safeway. Seems to work well, no smell and my blades have no signs of any rust.

I have tried some Camelia Sinensis (Chinese tea oil), good both for the steal and the wood on razors. Works very well.
