    Default Odd Grind O_o

I received my James Barlow & Sons razor this week and i have a question about it.. it has an odd ridge that was ground on one side. The ridge starts from the toe of the blade and ends past the heel. The s and part of the h in "sheffield" are missing so i was wondering if it was from a mistake on a re-grind or if its original from when it was first made. this on grind DOES NOT impede the honing process. It also has a very short monkey tail.. but its not like other stub tails i have seen.. what year do yall think its from?

I wouldn't call that grind common, but they are out there. Some have the groove only on the front, others on the front and back. I have at least one of each in my rotation.

Some have called that a "blood groove" but its primary function, if any, would be to reduce the weight of the blade and/or as a decorative touch.

    Just my $.02,

I was wondering exactly the same question when I saw the first one. Since then I have seen few.

On a Japanese sword, these grooves are called Hi. Their purpose is indeed to lighten the blade without seriously compromising it's strength and to provide some visual interest.

Extreme PITA to cut into the blade and polish BTW.

This is the thread I have been waiting for. I saw a W&B with a ridge very similar to that at a knife show a couple months back. Since I decided to spend all my money before I saw it, I had to pass. I posted a thread with a crude MS Paint drawing and got no bites! Surprise! I am happy to know that more are out there and that I might bet another chance at one.
