I would add if asked to do scales for a razor that has something more than generic scales, not a bad idea to confirm if custom is truly the desired direction. Maybe discuss why he wants changed. Even offer ideas of restore expectations, if that were to be decided. It's "easy" to replace the scales, sometimes not so much to go back.

Your client may question what he really wants. As you ponder which is "better", you can see how is it is to be on the fence.

Not saying you are talking someone out of their choice, just open up the communication. Once confirmed custom is desired, likely you learned something that will help you make something even more special for the owner.
