It pays to ask
SWMBO and I were out and about on Saturday and we dropped into a hardwood flooring shop.
While we were there I asked the assistant if they had any offcuts of solid flooring, explaining that I could use them for razor scales.
He told me that there was a skip out the back that they threw all the offcuts into and I was welcome to 'help myself'.
Unfortunately it had been emptied the day before, however, he told me that I could get as much as I wanted whenever I was passing and he found 6 or 8 pieces (about 4ft long) in the storeroom that he gave me in the meantime.
Brissy guys PM me and I'll let you know where it is.Hang on and enjoy the ride...

I did the same in a local sawmill and got a box or meranti offcuts (reddish brown hardwood).
It's used a lot for making windows. They were even nice enough to fire up the table saw and saw it into pieces of the right dimensions.Til shade is gone, til water is gone, Into the shadow with teeth bared, screaming defiance with the last breath.

I stopped at an old wood shop and asked the guy there for any hardwood cutoffs. He gave me everything here for $7.
Curly maple, oak, mahogany, cherry, lyptus, and two pieces of walnut.
I'm still going through it. It definitely pays to ask.
