starting making scales
Hi fellow forumers
I was wondering where do you get material from, for those beautiful wooden scales to make?
What thickness should I consider? (Mm)
thanks Rolf

Thanked: 15You might try googling for local suppliers of knifemaking equipment, many of them will carry wooden scales that they will supply to custom sizes. I haven't really worked with wood for razor scales but razors I own with wooden scales are generally about 2mm.

Honestly I'm a noob at restorations myself I'm on my 3rd restore but I had similar questions when I started. I spent a bit of time scrounging around the internet and truly it is a great resource for finding those beautiful rare hard woods that everyone uses. They can be found at woodcraft or similar places. That said my first set of scales was made from a piece of untreated red oak from my local big box home improvement store. It is a gorgeously light wood and has made a beautiful set for me. The piece I bought was 1/4" x 3" x 24" obviously quite a bit thick for a set of scales but after some time on the belt sander I brought it down to about half that width and it turned out great. On the up side I was able to mess up quite a bit and not cry to much as the wood was cheap and I really didn't want to mess up some ebony or similarly exotic or super expensive wood. That turned out to be a good call as I messed up 2 sets before I hit on all cylinders and made a great set.
