Thanked: 247Sticker stained scale..Any fix?
Anybody ever dealt with price sticker stains on celluloid? Any way to get rid of it, or blend it? I hate taking off perfectly good scales because of a little cosmetic inconsistency. And I hate seeing that perfect little black square where the price sticker sat for 5 years until I bought it. Does covering the whole scale in a similar adhesive material in an effort to "stain" the rest of the scale to match worth researching? Or it it that the rest of my scale got affected by UV, and the sticker kept that little spot safe?

Goo Gone always works for me. Can be found at just about any depatment/grocery/hardware store.

You can probably polish through it. Applying adhesive won't work because the adhesive didn't cause the stain, the UV hitting the rest of the scales did.

If its a case of sunlight 'bleaching' the scale around the sticker then it may be permanent. Otherwise +1 to all of the above advise.

A picture might help us give advice.
If it is UV based, and you can't get it even by hand, look for someone you trust with a buffer. If you don't have a local friend with said implement, then you could PM me and get my address and for the cost of whatever shipping method you'd prefer I'd be happy to give them a polish for you... it is Christmas and all.

Thanked: 247Well thanks very much for the offer. I do have a buffer, so I'll give it a go. I've tried Mothers, with no success. I've read some stuff on restoring color to bakelite and celluloid, and the common concensus seems to be that it can't be done. Although I can tell you from first hand experience, alcohol will bleach it. The opposite side scale is black, so it's safe to assume this is an effect of UV. Here's a pic just for good measure. Thanks again everyone.

Looks to me like oxidized Vulcanite. Polish will polish it, but not take off the color. A bit of fine sandpaper followed by very careful (the stuff is soft!) buffing with a fine compound should give you a good black surface. Keeping the surface out of the light will help keep the color, as will a coat of a good sealer like Renaissance Wax.
