Matt, thanks for the comprehensive explanation. So what do you do for waterproofing of high density/oil content woods?

All of my woods receive a multi layer Poly Tung Oil finish. It's as durable, water/oil/alcohol resistant and damage resistant as a urathane, but natural and easy to repair if damaged, unlike a urathane. I'll put a few coats on stabilized wood too, but only two or three, compared to 8-10 for non stabilized woods.

I love rich wood colors... I start imagining all sorts of projects I'd like to do. I could spend hours on this site... http://www.hobbithouseinc.com/personal/woodpics/

    Joe,
Excellent site. From a technical perspective there are some scattered terminology problems, however, this is one of the best compilations I've ever seen. I'll be directing students there in the future.
    Thanks,
    Ed

Thanks Ed. The interesting thing about the site is the more you look the more you find.

So which of the 671 woods will you choose for your next custom scale? Mystery #136 looks pretty intriguing to me
