I have a piece of Olive Wood Turning Square. Do I need to stabilize the wood before I make scales for a razor?

I only heard of stabilizing wood and am not familiar with this idea. I live in an apartment so that will limit what I can do. Can I put a finish on that will do this or something else that I can do that is a simple solution?
