Chipped DD
I came across this beauty in an antique store today, however did not pick it up because of the obvious chip, in a hurry, etc. I'm certainly second guessing myself at this point. I know the pic is not the best - but anyone with far more honing experience than myself believe I should run back there right now? Thanks in advance.

It would be a lot of work. You'd end up making a 5/8 out of a 6/8 if that was alright with you. Personally, unless they were selling very cheap I would have passed, having honed chips like that out in the past. The most important thing is to examine it under magnification to make sure there are no hairline cracks coming out of the chip and going further up the blade. If there are it is toast.
Be careful how you treat people on your way up, you may meet them again on your way back down.

From the pic it doesn't look too bad, should be fairly easy to take out on a DMT or low grit stone unless there are cracks further up in the blade. (Fairly easy does not equal little work, it will take some time)
But keep in mind that you might have to take off a fair bit of the blade and it will get smaller.
If it's a cheapo I would have given it a try if it's not any additional cracks, otherwise I would have passed.Last edited by Zephyr; 01-19-2012 at 10:26 PM.

They wanted $45 I believe, before any negotiations of course.
