Default Next Stage of the Blade Configuration

    Ok...

Fluting on the bottom of the tang starts out like this. Lines are started with one of those small cut-off wheels on a rotary tool. Then they are deepened with a triangular file. Adjustments can be made as you file to make distances equal and symmetrical and the same depth.

After a bit, they will start to shape up. No need to make them perfect yet because the parallel score lines and edges need to be sanded down first. The score lines are necessary to keep everything matched up as you work on it.

I also added a touch to the front of the blade. Notice the parallel score lines. The angled flat spot is where one of the diamonds or emeralds or rubies will go. More pics on another post. I seem to remember only three seem to work at a time.

Here are the next pics I have taken. This is another shot of the flutes on the bottom. They are still pretty rough, but not to worry.

This is another shot of what I did to the front of the blade. It's not much, but it adds a touch of "Bill" to the project.

The blade is still thick at the cutting edge because it still needs to be heat treated. I will grind it down farther when it comes back from Paul Bos. The parallel score marks at this location are extremely important.

The last pic from this set is the lay-out of the upper flutes. I just measure the same distance apart with a dot, then come back and use a small straight edge to eyeball all the lines in place. Don't know if you guys remember me saying that if something looks good ~ it is good. The next step is to cut each line with the cut-off wheel. Then more file work.

Bill, this is truly masterful! I love your fluting system as it's even more personal and artistic than that of a certain gentleman from Ponte San Giovanni. These detailed illustrated explanations are highly inspirational. Now where did I put that triangular file of mine?

But have you noticed that his credibility grew A LOT as soon as he actually said he wouldn't peek in in that other thread?

Wow, Bill, I'm really excited to see how this comes together. Though, I don't know if anyone should ever bring that thing anywhere near his face.

If JL drops that blade, forget about his travel kit. He's going to have to hope the counter stops it before he gets a free vasectomy.

I think I'd prefer to be wearing the lower half of a 'shark suit' when using something like that beast.

Xman: it's pics like Bill's that are a big reason having a virtually indestructible keyboard pays for itself many times over.
