Default Any suggestions as to where to purchase scale materials

    Hello:

I've decided to try to make some scales and would like any suggestions for sources of wood and
    other materials.

    Thanks,

    Donald

The Wiki is a great source of information, all you need should already be there.

How would you like a more difinitive answer? I just came from Woodcraft, a brick & mortar store (online as well) down the road from Home Depot here in Tulsa, with 5"x24"x1/4" pieces of ebony and bocote. The ebony was half off for $18 and the bocote full price for $14.

If you shop carefully on Flea Bay you will see "samples" of Exotic hardwood usually suitable for 4 to 6 sets of scales if you cut judiciously at a resonable price.

Some online lumber retailers also have samples for about the same price. Take the list below, see what you like best and start shopping for price.

I am partial to the richly colored hardwoods like Cocobolo, Brazilian Rosewood, and Blackwood.

It is more expensive, but I also bought 4 pieces of Heavily Acrylized Maple Burl (Natural, Blue, Green and Purple) that I haven't decided on the right razors to use them on yet. Actually I AM going to use the Natural Acrylized Maple Burl on my Wade & Butcher Barbers Only.

    Here is my My Shortlist:

Antler (Sheds if you live in the right area)
Bone (cow actually polishes up like glass with no need for CA or varnish)
    African Blackwood (Black)
    Camatillo (Purple)
    Figured Purpleheart (Purple)
    Bloodwood (Red)
    Pink Ivory (Pink)
    Osage Orange (Orange)
    Yellowheart (Yellow)
    White Ash
Box Elder Burl (Heavy Acrylic Stabilzed or it will be too flixible)
    Quilted Bubinga
    Figured Bubinga
    Quilted Sapele
    Lacewood
    Leopardwood
    Brazillian Tigerwood
    Ribbon Maple (Quilted Western Maple)
    Thuya Burl
    Madrone Burl
    Brazilian Rosewood
    Zirocote
    Manzanita
    Black & White Ebony
    Olivewood
    Ironwood
    Cocobolo
    Padauk
    Zebrawood
    Wenge
    Black Walnut
    Spalted Maple
    Bocote

May your lather be moist and slick, the sweep of your razor sure, and your edge always keen!
