Thanked: 9I got CRACK!
please no funnies about cocain and stuff
got the 10/8 Barber's Use WB today. What do you know, it's not 10/8 - just 8/8.
OK, I get over that and MAAS it for 3 hours. And what do I get? You guessed it - Crack. Two of them, actually.
Both cracks can be seen on both sides of the blade, going about 4/8 in each
Is there anything that can be done? I am almost tempted to try to hone it and shave with it anyway...
Thanks
Ivo

Thanked: 0Can you return the razor to the seller???
I wouldn't hone and shave with a razor that has two cracks in it!
Either try to return it or salvage the scales and bin the razor

Thanked: 9Already had to negotiate with the seller over the 10/8 vs 8/8 issue...
Plus, I am attached to it now, already develped a relationship with it. I don't need it for a lifetime, just for some time. Even a year would be ok
Thanks

Ivo who was the seller? If they sold you a cracked razor they should take it back. I'd have a tendency to stay away from a seller who wouldn't.

Since there is nothing you can do about the crack, you can try and hone the thing. That's what I'd do...

If you couldn't see the cracks until you cleaned it, or you think cleaning it caused the cracks, then you probably just have to suck it up. How bad are they? Do they effect the edge at all?
It's probably chancy, but you could try to hone it and see how it goes. If it cuts you up, though, it's the rubbish heap.

Well, now you have a razor that you can do what ever the hell you want to. It's your 'test' razor (and a great one at that! Better to test on a quality steel razor than a crappy one. At least any probelms are not due to the metal). Sure, hone it up! Try this solvent on the metal, or that one. You can push this razor to the limits of what you were nervous to do to your other blades. Try this cleaning technique or that honeing method. Hone with extreme pressure to see what the edge shape takes...
All in all, I think you will learn a lot, and learn it faster testing things out on this razor (or to have a 'tester' razor in general). You can debunk a lot of myths that are going around, as to the sure-fire way to do this or that. Instead of being one of the posters that provides insight because they have 'read a lot', you can be one that has insight because you have experienced it (the latter carries more weight).
I have an old blade that has a crack in it also. I found myself in a similar situation as you. I finished cleaning it, honed it up, and it shaves just fine (fantastic actually). Perhaps it's because the crack is small, and the blade is close to a wedge in grind (I have a feeling if it's a paper-thin full hollow, the flex in the blade would be an issue...actually I know it is, because I honed a full hollow 6/8 Puma with a crack in it). BUT you'll never know until you try.
My advice, try to hone it and see what happens....You'll at least learn what honing a cracked blade will look like!

But NO, I couldn't possibly. Reducing this hero to a 4/8! I did think I can shorten it though - it would come up to just under 2 inches for the edge if I do. How about this?
Seriously, I'll just hone it and try it. It is quite substantial and I don't think I'll have much flex. Some of the posts here convinced me that I should at least try - THANK YOU, GUYS!
THe razor is greatful, too - I am sure
Cheers

My G. Butler has a crack and it's a biconcave but so substantial that it's almost like a wedge. Shaves just fine but it will need new scales.
