Aggh! A cracked blade! What now?
So I grab my daily shave this morning (a 7/8 labeled H. Ernsto Hope, Solingen, and stamped with a "14") and the blade has cracked! You can just see it in the attached pics; on the shaving edge about middle of the blade.
Two questions:
1) Why? to my knowledge this razor was not struck against something or dropped, and there's no mark or chip. It appears to have just spontaneously split. Blade get too thin, or what?
2) Worth repairing? Looking at the crack it doesn't quite go halfway the width of the blade, but I'm guessing I'd need to take the blade down just past the crack to be sure to get it all. That'd makes this a 1/2 or even a 3/8. That's a lot of blade to remove.
Any advice?

Thanked: 21I've found that with some cracks, you can treat it as if it wasn't even there, and it won't affect your shave or stropping. Then again, some cracks will scratch your face, and if a fresh honing doesn't settle it in, then you're pretty much SOL.

Thanked: 1262I cannot think of any reason it would spontaneously crack. It is probably a goner

Old steel + generations of being ignored + stress of restoration + internal faults + exposure to heat and cold +
statistical probability = cracks
