3 New Restorations
These are 3 I've been working on. The first one is a Wade&Butcher 7/8 quarter hollow with 3-pin cocobolo scales. The second is a G. Crookes 7/8 1/4 hollow that I re-ground, with wenge scales, and the third is a 13/16 Schmachtenberg Bros. half hollow with Laburnum scales. The laburnum is (so far) my favorite wood I've worked with. It has tons of grain and figure, with a lovely texture. The laburnum and wenge have a Tru-oil finish, which I've found I like a lot. It's easy to work with, is glossy without being plastic-y, protects the wood from the inside out (like tung oil), and can be buffed (unlike tung oil). You still get the tactile pleasure of the wood, but it's wonderfully protected. They each have about 5 coats of Tru-oil. I started off with a Tru-oil finish on the cocobolo, but it's so naturally oily, it wouldn't dry, so I cleaned it off and went with a waxed finish, which is less glossy, but still protects the wood and brings out its beauty. The last pic is a close up of the scales before mounting, so maybe you can see the figure of the laburnum a bit better.

It's wonderful wood. Originally, I was going to use it for a 15/16 Joseph Elliot fullered grind razor I have, but the shape of the blade was a bit...problematic, so I put it on one of my other all-time favorite (p)ntbs razors.

Thanks Joe. I contacted Birchwood Labs to see if they offer any product samples and to check out their shipping rates.
