    Default Add third pin?

I have a fat filly with a 2-pin handle; the blade's so heavy that depending on how I'm holding it it can foul on closure. I'm not a skilled craftsman by any stretch of the imagination. I'm wondering if it's possible to make a 2-pin plastic handle into a 3-pin plastic handle.

It's certainly possible, but Fillys are usually very pretty. Seems like you'd wanna put some pimp custom scales on it.

Well yeah, it is pretty. I know what you mean about pimping the thing out, but I kind of like the simplicity of the scales, and was kind of wondering whether a third pin could simply be added, just to make them more robust. I love the stiffness and decisive closing action of 3-pin scales.

If I were going to add new scales, I think I'd want bakelite or lucelite. To my eye Fillies have something 1920s-ish about them, art-deco-ish, that I think wood scales wouldn't be well suited to.

That said, Joe your wood scales are the pimpest, baddest I've seen. And man do I love that TI 69 you sold me.

The proper design on the scales can mean a lot more than the material in my eyes. Since adding a third pin would likely mean removing the scales in the first place I'd also say pimp it, but do it up right. Retro.

Very good points all the way around. The design is truly the most important thing. I use wood because I love it, and because 99% of the time (IMO) it improves the appearance. That said, I have several with bakelite, celluloid, or horn scales I wouldn't change for the world, because for whatever reason, it suits that razor perfectly. But to answer your question, putting a third pin in isn't much of a problem at all. You would have to take it apart and re-pin it, but on all the Fillys I have/have had, it used those crappy looking Dovo type pins, so I'd wanna change them anyway.

I don't know enough to say whether they're dovo-type, but this one definitely has crappy pins.

I've seen Fillies with translucent scales, either blue or green, and I think that's exactly the right look. Some color and dash, but not trying too hard because the razor is pimp enough in its own right.

My other three razors have wood handles, and agree with you Joe that's usually what looks best. Esp. with those curved and meaty old quarter hollows you've been working on.

You haven't seen Bill's or Vlad's then. I'm a craftsman. Those guys are artists. I appreciate the compliment, though. One day, I'mma get there, if I keep working at it.

But would it cure the illness (i.e. fouling on closure)? I suppose you mean that when you close the razor the cutting edge digs itself into one of the scales. I cannot see how a third pin would cure that problem.
