sorry the jeweler's anvils are very small and light. not really designed for beating hot steel more for cold working softer metals... unfortunately for me mine are the bigger heavy ones not the dainty variety.

A small anvil type device is pretty much mandatory for pinning work, and useful for many things.
You can make one for a couple bucks. I used a body work Dolly (kragens, 3 bux) some minor grinding, polishing, drill some partial holes to use as a dapping block, works well.

I have 3 hammers under 6oz all. all polished to a mirror finish and a cutlers anvil that are also polished, I feel that is the way to much better looking work, but it's right to say that it is a bit of overkill as we all to touch up our pinning work with a bit of Dremel buffing, or similar.
Thanks for the thread, good info.

The bottom line is:Your going to have peening marks on the pin,no matter how polished the hammer or anvil is.

The bottom bottom line is no matter how polished they are when newly finished, sooner or latter they need to be tightened again and again Tap Tap tappity tap
