Thread: Peening with a spoon

Logic suggests that peening with a spoon makes more sense than with a ball peen hammer. I reason this way: with a ball peen hammer there is a relatively sharp curve to the peen part of the hammer. Thus, it is more likely to glance off the pin and strike the adjacent scale. This in return would require a scale repair after peening. The striking surface of a spoon is much gentler and thus much less likely to glance off the pin and strike the adjacent scale.

I've seen a friend of mine, who was into restoring razors, peen to tighten pinned razors with a large soup serving spoon. Dunno about pinning razors from scratch though.

If you use a jewelers hammer, it is curved on one side... And weighted appropritely.

I have ground down the "ball" on all of my ball peen hammers to be a more gradual curve on the area that I use for striking.

I found that I much preferred a slightly flatter surface than what comes on most ball peen hammers.

It may be more of a personal thing, but, I highly recommend it!
